This chronology shows how the Christians of the Middle Ages sought to protect themselves during their pilgrimages when face to face with Islam. Orders of Chivalry, founded to safeguard them, were then caught up in an impossible struggle to maintain the short-lived states in the Levant. After their fall in 1291: -the Hospitallers retreated from isle to isle while continuing to fight their new enemy, the Ottomans. -the Templars, the Bankers of Europe, withdrew into France where the tragic trial of 1307 took place. -the Teutonic Knights changed their objective as they went off to conquer a state (Prussia). -the Iberian Knights continued to struggle against the Spanish Moors.
